Certification issued in accordance with the 1997 NOx Technical Code would still remain valid over the service life of such engines. The amendments provide for the Tier III NOx standards to be applied to a marine diesel engine that is installed on a ship constructed on or after 1 January 2016 and which operates in the North American Emission Control Area or the U.S. Caribbean Sea Emission Control Area that are designated for the control of NOx emissions. The IMO NOx Tier III emission standards will take effect in the NECA areas from January 1st 2016. The Tier 3 requirements are applicable to all new build vessels (500 GT and above) with a length of ≥24 metres and sailing within a NECA zone with keel-laying on or after January 1st 2016 with an engine output of ≥130 kW.

Vessels without an IMO NOx tier are considered For Damen, the IMO Tier III NOX regulations represent a significant move towards cleaner and greener operations. Improving air quality in harbours is an important issue, especially when taking their proximity to urban locations into account. Damen has a large number of tug-owning clients in the North Sea and Baltic Sea Emission Control Areas. Therefore the significance of IMO Tier III cannot 2008 Amendments (Tier II/III)—Annex VI amendments adopted in October 2008 introduced (1) new fuel quality requirements beginning from July 2010, (2) Tier II and III NOx emission standards for new engines, and (3) Tier I NOx requirements for existing pre-2000 engines.The revised Annex VI entered into force on 1 July 2010. Most Tier I engines have been certified to the earlier, 1997, version of the NOx Technical Code which, in accordance with MEPC.1/Circ.679, may continue to be used in certain cases until 1 January 2011. Certification issued in accordance with the 1997 NOx Technical Code would still remain valid over the service life of such engines. IMO Tier III applies to engines > 130 kW for controlling NOx emissions.

The new IMO Tier III regulations will come into force for all vessels above 24 metres with a combined propulsion power of more than 750 kW and/or generator engines above 129 bkW, and which have had their keel laying after 1 January 2021.
